AFA was selected for the list after a rigorous application process that included an anonymous employee survey. The Great Place to Work® Institute surveyed randomly selected employees from 356 candidate companies for the process. Nearly half also provided written comments about their workplaces. Each candidate company also filled out a questionnaire detailing its people policies, practices and philosophies. Companies were evaluated on both the employee surveys and the company questionnaires, with the employees’ opinions being given two-thirds of the total score.

According to the January 23 issue of the magazine that hits newsstands January 16, "The CEO at this family-owned insurance company has lunch with every new hire in groups of 10 to 12 people. One-third of the workforce has been there more than 10 years, 10% more than 20 years."

In addition to the overall ranking, AFA garnered further recognition in other categories, including being ranked No. 3 in percentage of telecommuters (33% of Colleagues), No. 15 in the percentage of female employees (69% of Colleagues) and No. 13 on the Small Companies list.

AFA is one of the largest employers in Oklahoma City with more than 1,400 employees. About 1,000 employees work at its Oklahoma City headquarters, while others span 26 locations across the United States. AFA employees often talk about the company’s family atmosphere, a common theme among businesses that make the FORTUNE list.
